Corneal Ectasia
What is Ectasia?
As opposed to Keratoconus, a naturally occurring eye diseases causing the bulging of the cornea, Corneal Ectasia is associated with both Lasik (post-Lasik Ectasia) and Radial Keratotomy (post-RK Ectasia).
Both Lasik and RK (Radial Keratotomy) involve making incisions into the cornea, a small flap for Lasik, and several incisions for RK. Studies have shown that these incisions never fully heal, and while that does not cause problems for most patients, it could lead to the weakening or destabilization of the cornea. This weakening can eventually lead to a bulging of the surface of the cornea, impairing vision.

As corneal ectasia results in the same condition as Keratoconus, the treatment options are very similar. Scleral contact lenses are the most common treatment, while some cases require corneal transplant surgery.
